Casting

Casting

This is Tim's bliss. He is happiest when casting metal and making lovely parts. I took these pictures today as he was pouring the hot aluminum into the molds, which he also made. He made the furnace, too. It's the bucket looking thing right behind his hand.

Then it has to sit until it hardens. I have pictures of him opening the molds to reveal his handiwork, but they're on photobucket (coz I'm running out of room on Flickr) so I'll put those up later.

Isn't that cool? It's the ultimate recycling. He melts down otherwise useless metal and makes useful things with them.

Mrs. B Yeah, me too!

Hulda, He's making different parts for things some different people need right now. He sometimes casts gifts, too. He has a wooden heart that he's planning to use as a pattern to make a mold and cast that. I can't wait to see that. It's for a woman he works with.

This is great. How does he heat up the metal - does he have a furnace or a kiln? Are these things lead (like toy soldiers) or other metals? Very, very interesting - I like slightly dangerous crafting, I used to make my own cold compress soap but gave up when DD2 became mobile. Crafting on the edge, extreme crafting...ooh the excitement!

I accidentally uploaded the pictures to flickr after all so I'll put up some pictures of what he made later today. Nothing too exciting, though...parts for a boat ladder or something like that. :)

Plainandsimple He's actually using aluminum. You made me laugh with the "extreme crafting" remark. I'll have to tell Tim when he's up.

I love the idea of making soap and have looked into it so many times, but I always chicken out! How neat that you did it. I don't blame you at all for stopping when the little ones came along. Scary!

Oh, I forgot part of your question. Yes, he has a kiln (he calls it something else, let me think...crucible..that's it). He made the crucible also. He's a handy one. :)
