A Hymn

Mrs. B. asked us what our favorite going home hymns were yesterday. I commented that Presbies don't sing that many "going home" hymns so I named a few of my other favorites. Some of these were new to some folks so I thought I would offer the words to the hymns here. I'll start with The Church's One Foundation.

The Church's One Foundation
The Church's one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord.
She is His new creation by water and the Word.
From heaven He came and sought her to be His Holy bride.
With his own blood he bought her, and for her life He died.

Elect from every nation, yet one o'er all the earth,
Her charter of salvation One Lord, One faith, one birth
One Holy name she blesses, Partakes one Holy food
And to one hope she presses, With every grace endued.

Though with a scornful wonder this world sees her oppressed,
By schisms torn asunder, by heresies distressed,
Yet saints their watch are keeping; Their cry goes up, "How Long?"
And soon the night of weeping shall be the morn of song.

Mid toil and tribulation and tumult of her war,
She waits the consummation of peace forevermore
Till with the vision glorious her longing eyes are blest
And the great church victorious shall be the Church at rest.

Yet she on earth has union with God the Three in One.
And mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won.
O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we,
Like them, the meek and lowly, May live eternally.

(Hmmm, I guess it's sort of a "going home" hymn) :)

It was written in 1864 by Samuel Sebastian Wesley. I guess it's really a Methodist hymn. :::giggle:::

I do like this hymn, Lisa. We sing it at our church, and it's very majestic. Thanks for posting the words.

Hi Lisa I just thought I'd have a browse through your archives (makes you sound like a library) anyway this is my MOST favourite hymn. Makes me cry. :o)
Love all the other stuff, pictures, etc. but if I commented on it all I would never finish tea! Can't have the natives going hungry now can I?
